About This Station

The station is located in Upper Clarkdale, Arizona at Latitude 34:46:06, Longitude -112:03:42.

The weather station equipment is a Davis Weather Monitor II. The data is collected every 2 seconds and the site is updated every 5 minutes. The weather data is collected and organized using Weather Display Software. The station includes an anemometer, rain gauge and a thermo-hydro sensor situated in optimal positions for highest accuracy possible. In addition, lightning storm information is gathered by a Boltek StormTracker lightning detector with Astrogenic NexStorm display software. The Boltek hardware can "see" strikes up to several hundred miles away, and the NexStorm software then calculates the approximate position which is then displayed on a map. To much more accurately pinpoint the location of lightning storms the data is also fed to the StrikeStar lightning detection network, which correlates the data from many stations. The resulting information from this network is also sent to Weather Underground, where it is combined with NexRad radar to produce very useful storm tracking maps.

About the Town of Clarkdale

Clarkdale was founded in 1911 by the United Verde Copper Company to provide housing for its smelter workers, and was named after the company's founder, William A. Clark. Jerome, the location of the mine was a town built on a steep mountainside 4 miles to the west. The smelter was situated in the valley near the Verde River, with a railroad transporting raw ore to the refining and smelting operation in the valley below. Clarkdale was a "planned community", whose a very ordered layout made this "company town" unique. The town was somewhat segregated. Upper town was to house the engineers and executives, while Lower town was for the plant managers and other "working class". In the middle, a downtown area with a large park, stores, gas station, theater, and a clubhouse with gym and swimming pool, where there were cultural and social events that all could enjoy.

In the early 1900's life wasn't easy for everyone. Members of the adjoining Yavapai-Apache Indian Reservation were the target of considerable discrimination up until the 1960's when social unrest began to change the public's view of minorities. Indeed, nowadays, the Yavapai-Apache people are highly respected and provide cultural and economic stabiltiy to the region. Since the opening of Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde in the 1990's, the Tribe has become the largest employer in the Verde Valley.

Present time Clarkdale is a friendly community, a great place to visit, situated about 20 miles from Sedona red-rock country. If your visiting Arizona, you won't want to miss Clarkdale's Verde Canyon Railroad, it's an experience you'll treasure for years to come. Starting from Clarkdale, the train slowly traverses the picturesque and rugged remote canyon of the Verde River which is home to a multitude of wildlife. All are fair game for the camera! From Javelina to Eagles, Cranes to Mountain Lions, they are all there waiting to be discovered.

While in Clarkdale eat at the famous Su Casa Mexican restaurant. This is "real" Mexican food. Su Casa continues to be one of the outstanding restaurants in the Verde Valley/Sedona area year after year.

For a more western dining/entertainment experience the fabulous Blazin' M Ranch in nearby Cottonwood, where there's something for the whole family. Before they ring the dinner bell check out the many unique shops, while the kids take a train ride. Have your picture taken dressed in old western clothes. And then its time for good-ol' ranch-style mouth-watering food to make any cowboy happy. Have a dessert while enjoying great western music and tom-foolery of the house band. You can be assured the Mabery family will make your visit memorable and fun.
